Description

TILT, short for Things I Listened To, is a web app that analyzes and visualizes your personal music streaming history from Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music. Which songs did I listen to on a particular day? Who are my most streamed artists and albums? At what times of day do I listen to music most often? TILT can answer these questions and more. Your data never leaves your device, because all analyses run entirely in the browser — as a Progressive Web App, TILT even works offline.

TILT takes advantage of EU data protection law: streaming services offer the option to export a copy of the user data they store. This includes your listening history, which is provided as CSV or JSON files. TILT reads these files, organizes them internally into a database-like structure and prepares the streaming data for the following features:

  • A dashboard with all kinds of statistics, e. g. total listening time, distribution across times of day and days of the week, as well as charts of the most played songs, artists and albums.

  • A browser for viewing the history of individual days.

  • A search function for finding specific songs or artists.

  • Detail views with statistics on individual songs or artists.

With some streaming services, exporting your data can take several days. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can try TILT in a demo mode with randomly generated dummy data.

A little trip back in time

For a tool that deals with the past, it seems only fitting to talk about the past. Development on TILT began in late 2022 — still under the working title Spotify History Viewer — as a personal learning project to familiarize myself with React. I liked the idea of building an app that shows you your own listening habits. Why wait for Spotify Wrapped? Here’s a look at an early version of the app:

When I turned to my Bachelor’s thesis in early 2023, the half-finished project was left gathering dust in my digital drawers … that was until 2026. AI had turned software development inside out, and suddenly it was easy not only to finish the app but also to add all sorts of features. Among other things, it became a PWA, gained support for more streaming services and “casually along the way” got a complete redesign under a new name. And so the original React learning project turned into a playground for understanding and exploring the possibilities of vibe coding.
