Description

I’ve studied Media Informatics between 2019 and 2023 which of course also goes through the basics of digital image editing—or in other words, how to to work with Adobe Photoshop and similar software (like Affinity Photo, which I do prefer!). Part of the appropriately named course “digital image editing” were not only a variety of practical exercises in Photoshop, but also the creation of a book in which we had to document our acquired knowledge. This allowed us to dive into the foundations of image editing and desktop publishing at the same time.

The book was created over the course of the entire semester and covers pretty much all the important terms and techniques of digital image editing (and how to apply them in Adobe Photoshop). The book has chapters covering ten different topics:

  1. The Basics

  2. Image Composition

  3. Selections

  4. Layers

  5. Advanced Masking

  6. Color

  7. Levels

  8. Basic Retouching

  9. Beauty Retouching

  10. Text

Each chapter features various sample images (a mixture of self-made photos and course material) and explaining text.

Photomontage for German Seamen’s Mission

The 11th and final chapters was about creating a photomontage, which was the final course assignment. We were asked to create a montage as an advertisement for a product or company of choice—in my case, I chose the German Seamen’s MIssion where I completed a voluntary service about two years prior. The image I created shows a container vessel enclosed in a glass bottle, which is sealed by a cork. The cork has “Covid-19” written on it—the advertisement points out the difficult situation of seafarers during the Covid pandemic, where for a very time they were not allowed to leave their ship. They were “Stranded at Sea”—“Gestranded auf hoher See”.
